Chiropractic Facts
Chiropractic, meaning something done by hand, is a system of health care based on the function of the nervous system. Chiropractic is considered a science, art, and philosophy as well as being the third largest health profession in the United States.
Chiropractic has always emphasized the concept of wellness, a perspective that health is more than just being disease free. The orientation of wellness is toward maximizing the potential of which the individual is capable. Although chiropractic has received much criticism for embracing a wellness perspective over the years, wellness care is now considered the current direction of mainstream health care.
Chiropractic works by increasing the ability of the nervous system to regulate and control all of our bodies’ functions. It is based on the premise that everyone's body contains an innate ability to regulate and heal itself and the nervous system is the substrate in which this natural healing power manifests.
The functional ability of our bodies to heal themselves can be degraded by stress. Stress comes in three main forms and they are all cumulative.
They include:
| Physical Stress | Mental/Emotional Stress |
|
|
| Chemical Stress | |
|
Stress causes our bones to misalign which causes interference to the nerve system. This misaligned bone and the resulting nerve system interference is known as a SUBLUXATION. The procedure in which a subluxation is corrected is called an ADJUSTMENT.
Adjustments re-align the bones and remove the nerve interference. This allows the body’s own natural healing power to not only reduce unwanted symptoms, but provides adaptability to help deal with the effects of stress before other problems occur.
The fact that chiropractors have an unusually high rate of patient satisfaction is evident to how well chiropractic works.
Chiropractic adjustments come in many forms depending on the technique being employed. There are a myriad of techniques; some work better with some people and others work better with others. The important thing is to find what technique works best with you. The type of technique(s) that a chiropractor uses depends on the doctor’s training, beliefs, skills and personal style. Dr. Lipman uses a wide variety of techniques most especially SOT.
Chiropractic was founded by D.D. Palmer of Davenport, Iowa, on September 18th, 1895. The first adjustment was performed with the intent of restoring the hearing of a deaf janitor named Harvey Lilard. D.D. Palmer’s son, B.J. Palmer and others expanded and developed chiropractic in the early and mid 20th century making it into the health profession we know today.
